Tonight was a night I hope we talk about 30 years from now. I really wish somebody would have been there to video tape what happened, because I don’t think I can give the story the justice it deserves. I’m going to try though, because it was insane.
If you recall, I said last night that we had a chance of rain. Well, it rained. It rained a lot!
Let’s rewind to a little after 5:00 this evening. Jake called and said that the storm would be rolling in soon and I should drive down in the field to get some pictures. Sounds good to me. It took me a minute to get everyone and everything thrown in the suburban, so by the time we were on our way to the combine Jake called again to say I better hurry if I want to get any pictures. I got behind the combine and was able to snap a couple shots before he headed to the house.
We were just about to the field entrance when it started to sprinkle. I thought “okay, not bad. Let’s just hurry and unload and we will be fine.” Just as I was finishing my happy little thought the heavens opened up and it went from a light sprinkle to “Holy torrential downpour”. I’m pretty proud of how fast I leapt into action. There was 3 semi’s with wheat that needed to be tarped and moved, and the combine and grain cart unloaded and moved.
Jake pulled the combine up to one of the semi’s and turned on the auger. I thought he was going to unload the combine and then go get the grain cart, so I started to get out to tarp one of the semis. Then I saw Jake running to the grain cart. It took a second for that to sink in. “Oh okay, Jake is going to get the grain cart. Wait… the combine is still unloading. Oh s***, I’m supposed to be on the combine.” I don’t know the last time I ran that fast. I don’t even remember climbing into the combine. I think I flew actually.
I finished unloading the combine, moved it to the shed, and flew back out of it. I was running my little heart out to get back to the semi’s to tarp one. Every step I slowed down a little bit as my boots sloshed with water and the wind pushed me backwards. I managed to get the tarp across the truck but thank goodness Jake made it back to get it tight and latched, because I was failing miserably. At that point it was raining straight sideways.
In the couple of minutes it took us to accomplish all of that, it had already rained enough to make everything a sloppy mess. The semi’s were already stuck, and I don’t imagine they will be going anywhere for the next few days. We were all soaking wet and surprisingly laughing. I think if we didn’t laugh we would cry. Maybe one of these days we will finish harvest!
We all made it inside, dried off, and Jake even helped me whip up supper. The best part of the night was we got to spend the whole evening together as a family. I really can’t complain. Yes, we all want to be done with harvest, but we made some really awesome memories tonight and I will totally be grateful for that!
