I’ve decided that flying is a good time to write. We are headed home from D.C. and I couldn’t be more excited to hug my babies. We had such a great while we were in the Capitol and I know it’s going to take me awhile to process everything. There is so much to see and take in that it’s completely overwhelming trying to decide what to spend time on.
We didn’t get to do much on Saturday since we arrived fairly late in the afternoon. We got settled into the hotel and had a nice supper at our hotel’s restaurant. We called it an early evening because we knew Sunday was going to be a full day.
We tried to do as much as we could Sunday since it was our only full free day. After I roughly figured it up we ended up walking at least 10 miles. We got to see the national mall and visit all of the monuments there. The only museum we got to visit was the natural history museum. We wanted to go to the American History museum and the Holocaust museum but the lines were terribly long to get in.
After we had walked around the national mall we walked up to the White House and got to see it. It was really neat to get to see it in person and see how heavily guarded it really is. The weather was perfect for most of the day while we were out and about. It was cloudy and cool so was perfect for all the walking we did. Sunday evening we met up with the other members from our district and had an amazing steak dinner at The Chophouse.
Monday we were up bright and early to hear from Farm Bureau staff about the issues we would be talking about and updates on where certain bills were at in their processes.
(Holy cow, we are in the worst turbulence ever right now! I would order a rum but not even the stewardesses are allowed out of their seats!)
Okay, I’ve let go of my death grip on Jake and can type again. So Monday, after we had our morning meetings we had a group lunch at a Brazilian steakhouse and then headed to Arlington Cemetery. I don’t know that I’ve ever been so humbled as walking through Arlington.
You could just feel the respect and honor in the air. We got to witness the changing of the guards which was breathtaking. The precision and discipline they have is incredible. When we were waking back we actually got caught between two funerals going on. I didn’t realize how big the cemetery was and how many services they have there every day.
… Well, I didn’t get to finish this while we were flying. I spent the rest of the flight doing everything in my power not to throw up from air sickness. But I’ll go ahead and finish about our trip.
Tuesday was our last full day in D.C. and boy was it a full one. We spent the day at the Capitol meeting our Senators and congressmen to talk about the GMO labeling bill. We sat in on meetings and got to give our opinions on issues. It was an exhausting day dealing with politics and made us ready to be back home in Kansas.
I’m so thankful for the opportunity to get to go on this trip, and I actually loved getting to see so much history. I hope that we get to go back someday because there is so much we didn’t have time to do and see. But I’m even more thankful to be back home in Kansas with my babies, cows, and chickens.
