Instead of resolutions, I’m focusing on these Bible verses for the New Year.
Every year I plan out my resolutions, and like the rest of the majority, shortly fail to live up to them. I am left feeling failure and disappointment for not being able to keep up with the unrealistic expectations I set for myself. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to do that again this year.
That’s why this year I decided I will focus on these Bible verses for the new year. These are verses that always stick out to me as I am reading my Bible, and are such good reminders for us as we enter another year.
2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!”
As we leave the old year behind, we have this truth that in Christ we are a new creation. This verse can remind us throughout the year that because we are in Christ, He has made us new.
Ephesians 4:22-24
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
This verse reminds us to put off our old self, and to be made new in attitude of our minds. This reminder is such a good one to remember throughout the year.
Ecclesiastes 3:11
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Our timing is not God’s timing. And patience is not my strong suit. It can be so hard to trust in His timing, but this verse reminds us of the truth that He has made everything beautiful in its time.
Proverbs 3:3
“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.”
This verse is a simple yet powerful reminder to carry with us throughout the year.
Colossians 3:12
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
This verse is one of my favorites, as I pull it out time and time again to remind myself of how I am called to act. Not all of these traits come natural, but this is such a good verse to remind us how to get back on track for how God calls us to live.
John 13:34
“A new command I give you: Love another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
Loving people is not always easy by any stretch. Especially people who have wronged us or irritate us. This verse reminds us of the command Jesus gave us to love others as He loves us.
Lamentations 3:22-23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
We are not consumed, and His mercies come new every morning. There is no doubt that we will fail over the next year, but what a great reminder that we are offered new mercy and grace!
Colossians 3:17
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
My motivation is to bring glory to God in all I do. I love the reminder that this verse gives to do it all in the name of Jesus.
Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Our hearts are deceitful, friends. I can’t tell you how many times trusting in my own emotions and knowledge has failed me. This year I want to remember not to lean on my own understanding.
